Jim Robbins is co-chairing the Ontario Bar Association Construction Law/Labour Law continuing legal education program “Construction Labour Law – Building a Firm Foundation”.

Mary Cornish spoke at the International Law Association 2006 Conference on Securing Justice for Women Workers in Latin America.

The International Law Association Conference 2006 is a large international conference with over 700 lawyers from Canada, US and many countries around the world. Keynote speakers include Lech Walesa and Cherie Booth, with Hans Blix attending to speak about his report on Iran and nuclear proliferation. The conference is to be held in Toronto on June 5 - 8, 2006, and has a website at www.ila2006.org.

Mary Cornish, in her capacity as Chair of the International Law Section of the Canadian Bar Association, organized a panel for the conference on Securing Human Rights Justice: Regional Human Rights Mechanisms. The panel will explore the role of regional mechanisms such as the Inter-American system, European system and African system in securing human rights. Mary will be delivering a paper for the panel, titled Securing Justice for Women Workers in Latin America: The Role of the Inter-American Human Rights System. The paper will be posted on the Conference website, and is also available on our publications page.

Other speakers on the panel as Dean Claudio Grossman, Dean of Law at the American University in Washington and former President of the Inter American Commission on Human Rights, Senator Andreychuk who chaired the Canadian Senate Committee which urged the Canadian government to ratify the OAS American Convention on Human Rights, Professors Craig Scott and Obi Okiafora at Osgoode and Robert Amsterdam.

Veena Verma spoke at a conference entitled "National Migrant Justice Gathering: Building Solidarity, Taking Action", hosted by KAIROS, National Alliance of Philippine Women in Canada, STATUS Campaign, and UFCW Canada.

She spoke on a panel called "Precarious Status, Precarious Rights" on June 10 at 1pm. The goal of the national gathering is to lay the foundations for a lasting migrant rights network in Canada and will include migrant workers and migrant justice advocates from across Canada.

Veena Verma spoke at a conference for the Farmworkers Justice Fund, an NGO that advocates on behalf of migrant farmworkers in the United States

The conference focussed on guestworker programs in developed nations outside the U.S., particularly Europe and Canada. She spoke about guestworkers in Canada and the Canadian Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program. The audience was primarily non-government organizations that work on immigration and labor issues, but also some legislative staff in Congress and media reporters. The purpose was to educate people in the U.S. so that they can make intelligent decisions about how to manage migration and make sensible recommendations to Congress as it debates immigration policy.

Jeffrey Andrew spoke at the Lancaster Conference on November 3, 2005 on Substance Abuse Issues in Labour law

Jeff spoke about: Evolving arbitral and human rights treatment of addictions and the related matter of substance abuse problems which are disabilities but not yet addictions; the type of mecial evidence needed to prove the existence of an addiction; the arbitral treatment of recreational drug use versus disabilities; the types of and limits to drug testing; enforceability of last-chance agreements and drafting challenges. His tips to union representatives were:

  1. Train staff and stewards on the medical and legal complexities of addictions in the workplace and have other expert advisors available who can serve as resources so that members with these problems can be assisted in a constructive way,
  2. Gathering compelling evidence is critical in these cases, especially reliable medical evidence about the nature of the problem and a worker's rehabilitation steps,
  3. Be very cautious about any agreements and settlements you contemplate which may touch on these issues.

David Bloom spoke at the Lancaster conference on November 3, 2005.

He participated in a panel discussing "The top 10 rules of discipline and discharge." The panel discussed progressive discipline ,culminating incident, pre-discharge procedures, "obey now, grieve later", factors in discipline assessment, and mitigating circumstances.

Mary Cornish presented at the Canadian Bar Association's Annual Canadian Legal Conference entitled Equality Rights - The Impact of International Law and Policy

Mary Cornish spoke in Mexico City on July 29, 2005 about legal strategies in the area of women's rights and pensions and benefits under conditions of globalization in Canada.

Both travelled to Mexico as part of a delegation of Canadian Association of Labour Lawyers to the "International Meeting of Labour Lawyers and Trade Unionists - In Defense of Social Security and Public Services." The meeting brought together representatives from labour lawyer organizations throughout the Americas, including the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Argentina, and Venezuela. At the conclusion of the three day meeting, the organizations agreed to form a network of labour lawyer organizations to facilitate the work of seeking labour justice throughout the Americas.
