Mary Cornish spoke at the International Law Association 2006 Conference on Securing Justice for Women Workers in Latin America. The International Law Association Conference 2006 is a large international conference with over 700 lawyers from Canada, US and many countries around the world. Keynote speakers include Lech Walesa and Cherie Booth, with Hans Blix attending to speak about his report on Iran and nuclear proliferation. The conference is to be held in Toronto on June 5 - 8, 2006, and has a website at www.ila2006.org. Mary Cornish, in her capacity as Chair of the International Law Section of the Canadian Bar Association, organized a panel for the conference on Securing Human Rights Justice: Regional Human Rights Mechanisms. The panel will explore the role of regional mechanisms such as the Inter-American system, European system and African system in securing human rights. Mary will be delivering a paper for the panel, titled Securing Justice for Women Workers in Latin America: The Role of the Inter-American Human Rights System. The paper will be posted on the Conference website, and is also available on our publications page. Other speakers on the panel as Dean Claudio Grossman, Dean of Law at the American University in Washington and former President of the Inter American Commission on Human Rights, Senator Andreychuk who chaired the Canadian Senate Committee which urged the Canadian government to ratify the OAS American Convention on Human Rights, Professors Craig Scott and Obi Okiafora at Osgoode and Robert Amsterdam. Veena Verma spoke at a conference entitled "National Migrant Justice Gathering: Building Solidarity, Taking Action", hosted by KAIROS, National Alliance of Philippine Women in Canada, STATUS Campaign, and UFCW Canada.
