Paul Joseph
James Cavalluzzo (Toronto)
Cavalluzzo will receive the Law Society Medal for using the law to
promote access to justice for those at the economic margins and for
his strong commitment to legal scholarship. Called to the Bar in 1973,
Cavalluzzo began his career at a large firm on Bay Street and left
shortly thereafter to pursue his interest in labour and public law.
He earned a L.L.M. from Harvard Law School. In 1983, he became a founding
partner now known as Cavalluzzo Hayes Shilton McIntyre and Cornish.
Throughout his career, he has represented trade unions, professional
associations and individuals, primarily in the areas of labour, constitutional,
administrative and public law. Cavalluzzo’s commitment to public
service has been demonstrated through his work on two complex public
inquiries. In 2000, he was appointed to serve as Chief Commission
Counsel to the Walkerton Inquiry and again in 2004 to the Arar Inquiry.
His nominators praise Cavalluzzo for demonstrating “the very
best attributes that one would hope to see in an advocate. He has
been fearless in representing the interests of his clients, while
displaying the utmost courtesy to his opponents and the tribunals
before whom he has appeared.”
Founding
Partner Elizabeth Shilton Retires
For the first time in our firm’s history, one of our founding partners
is retiring. After almost a quarter century of dedicated service to
our clients, Elizabeth Shilton has decided to retire. We are grateful
for having had the opportunity to work with so fine and talented a lawyer
and colleague and we congratulate Elizabeth on her retirement.
Many of our clients will be familiar with Elizabeth’s many achievements
in labour law generally and, in particular, in the areas of equity jurisprudence
and education law.
A first generation feminist labour lawyer, Elizabeth has been a leading
thinker and litigator in the development of equality jurisprudence concerning
women in Ontario and Canada. She devoted many hours of service to Canada’s
Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF) and has been at the hub
of developing and pursuing strategies for advancing the interests of
women through challenges for substantive legal equality. She was also
counsel to our clients on several precedent-setting pay equity cases
in the province.
Elizabeth also has a long and highly regarded history of representing
teacher federations in Ontario in matters of collective bargaining,
arbitration, professional regulation, legislative challenge and governance.
She was heavily involved in the variety of litigation challenging aspects
of Bill 160, including the successful defence against an application
by the Attorney General to enjoin the teachers' province-wide two-week
political protest. In 1996, Elizabeth authored the definitive labour
text, Education Labour and Employment Law in Ontario, which navigates
the complex statutory and historical context that is education law in
Ontario, and continues to be a first point of reference on matters of
labour law in the education sector.
We wish Elizabeth a full and happy retirement.
