Hugh O'Reilly heads the firm's pensions and benefits practice group. Known for his solid handle on all aspects of employment pension and benefits law, Hugh has worked on many high-stakes pension issues, most recently representing the IAMAW, Air Canada’s largest union, during that company’s restructuring to avoid insolvency. Hugh has extensive experience representing unions across Canada in the area of pensions and benefits. Hugh has worked with clients on pension plan administration, investment, wind-up and surplus withdrawal issues. Hugh's practice includes other areas of employment law including issues related to insolvency, executive compensation, wrongful dismissal and employment standards matters. Hugh is one of the first to use class action laws to protect employees’ and retirees’ rights. One of Canada’s leading practitioners in discrimination and human rights provisions, Hugh has published papers regarding obesity and discrimination. A popular speaker and educator, Hugh has addressed the CPBI and the International Foundation, as well as insurance conferences, on developing precedents in human rights litigation. Hugh also advises multi-employer pension plans on governance issues and internal matters such as constitutional matters. Prior to joining Cavalluzzo, Hugh was a partner in a large international law firm, specializing in pension and benefits and employment law. He has also worked as in-house counsel for a major Canadian trust company and as a senior pension policy advisor in the NDP government in Ontario. During this period, Hugh was instrumental in developing current pension surplus sharing and solvency regulations. In 2001, Hugh was appointed by the Superintendent of Financial Services to the Pension Legal Advisory Committee of the Financial Services Commission of Ontario. Hugh was appointed Vice-Chair of the Committee this year. Hugh is a regular columnist for Benefits Canada and serves on the magazine’s editorial board.
