Since
his call to the bar in 1977, Jim has litigated numerous
leading cases before provincial and federal labour relations
boards on behalf of many trade unions. In recent years
he has participated as nominee to a number of interest
arbitration boards in Nova Scotia on behalf of crown attorneys,
hospital workers, dockyard supervisors and trades, police,
and firefighters. He was chief negotiator for the Ontario
Crown Attorneys’ Association during its most recent
round of bargaining and advises physician associations
at major Toronto hospitals concerning governance and related
matters. Jim continues to be involved with complex labour
relations issues in the broadcasting and airline sectors
and now acts as outside labour law counsel to the National
Hockey League Players’ Association.
Jim is a graduate of the University of Toronto Law School
and prior to that attended the Industrial and Labor Relations
School at Cornell University. He is certified as a specialist
in labour law by the Law Society of Upper Canada and is a past
Chair of the Labour Law Section of the Canadian Bar Association,
Ontario. Jim founded the firm with Paul Cavalluzzo and Elizabeth
Shilton in 1983.
