Cavalluzzo LLP is horrified by the recent shootings in Atlanta and the resulting loss of eight lives. Regardless of the stated motives of the individual perpetrator, this was at its core an act of gender and race based violence, reflective of systemic racism and hatred toward women and girls and of society’s condonation of violence toward sex workers and those presumed to be involved in this work. Additionally, the privilege accorded to the accused by the law enforcement officers who responded once again highlights how often that same privilege is not extended where the accused perpetrator is Black, Indigenous or a person of colour. Our hearts go out to the families of the victims and all those who are affected by this event and the issues it raises.
